GroupTalk Push to Talk (PTT) service

Push to Talk is a communication technology historically used in two way radio communication for half duplex communication, allowing users to press a button to activate the microphone and communicate in real-time with voice in a group of users. Nowadays, this walkie talkie feature can be obtained as an app on mobile phones.

A PTT group is the equivalent of a channel in traditional two way radio communication.

GroupTalk is a cloud based Push to Talk service for group communication and security solutions for businesses. The GroupTalk app can be used in conjunction with web based dispatchers (command and control), enabling real time group communication where users can talk to each other in a group by pressing a button instead of making a call.

In the GroupTalk app, you press the PTT button when you want to talk and hold the button while speaking. When you release the button, your transmission ends, and other users in the talk group can speak.

The GroupTalk app is available on both iPhone (iOS) and Android phones, including iPads and Android tablets. It is also available for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac computers.

The number of users in a PTT group is practically unlimited, or to be more specific, thousands of connected users. Typically, there are 3 to 20 users in a PTT group when collaborating.

On iPhone, phone calls take priority (this is determined by Apple), so a phone call will always interrupt an ongoing GroupTalk call. If you are on a phone call, you will “miss” the incoming GroupTalk call.

On Android phones, GroupTalk has priority by default, and the user won’t be interrupted if the phone rings. There is a setting in the GroupTalk app called “Prioritize Phone Calls”, which allows phone calls to interrupt a GroupTalk call. Only the GroupTalk user will hear the incoming phone call, not the other person on the GroupTalk call.

If the user is on a phone call and hears an incoming GroupTalk call, they must end the phone call before responding with PTT in the talk group.
